Tant (তাঁত) Saree is a traditional Bengali saree originating from the Bengal region of eastern India and Bangladesh. Tant sarees are woven from fine cotton threads and are known for their lightweight, breathable, and slightly transparent texture. They are considered one of the most comfortable sarees for the hot and humid climate of the Indian subcontinent.
During the British colonial period, the traditional handloom industry faced significant challenges due to policies that favoured the textile industry of Manchester. Despite these challenges, the rich Tant weaving tradition and culture successfully survived and continue to thrive.
The traditional art of weaving Jamdani, regarded as one of the finest varieties of Tant textiles, has been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
